Soul Knight Review

Soul Knight is a free to play, 2D top-down action shooter mixed with rogue-like elements where you explore randomly generated dungeons in hopes of uncovering big loot. Developed and published by ChillyRoom, Soul Knight looks like a cute, unique game that stands out from the crowd. Let’s find out!

Soul Knight Main Menu

The game opens up with a nice menu which features great, upbeat music. You can tap on the screen to start the game, or tap the gear icon in the bottom left corner of the screen to open up a menu where you can enter a gift code, change the language, turn off sound effects or the music. If English is not your native language, then you can switch to 7 other languages included in the game.

Tapping on the main menu screen will give you two options: start a new game, or play in co-op mode. To play co-op mode, both of the players will have to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network and then one of the players hosts the game for the other to join.

You can’t play online with players around the world but this is still a pretty good feature if you’d like to play with your friends.

If you prefer to play solo, simply tap on the New Game button and the game will quickly tell you about the magic stones that you have to bring back. Once that’s done you are thrown into the game with a cute cat with blue eyes as your companion.

Soul Knight Controls

Soul Knight Controls

The controls are simple: hold the virtual analog stick on the left side of the screen to move around, and hold the button on the right corner of the screen to fire. Next to the button is a power up that may give you increased fire rate. Above the power up button is a button for changing weapons.

Once you collect more weapons in the game the number on the button will change. What this number shows is the amount of Energy it uses when one bullet is fired. If you run out of Energy then you can switch to a melee weapon or use a pistol that doesn’t take up Energy.

To interact with items such as chests, simply tap on the right button that is used to fire your weapon. One of the features that make this game less frustrating is its auto-aim mechanic. With auto-aim you can freely focus on moving your hero around in these fast-paced environments, trying to get your enemies in sight, without having to worry about aiming at them correctly. This makes the game much more fun.

On the top left corner of the screen you can see the amount of HP (red bar), Shield (gray bar) and Energy (blue bar) you have left, and on the top right corner of the screen is the pause button as well as the amount of Gold you currently have.

If you pause the game you will see on the left side a circle which indicates that you can record your gameplay. That is a great addition which also lets you share your video to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or by e-mail.

Soul Knight Features

After finishing the tutorial you will be taken to the hub world of the game, where you can select a different hero, chat with other heroes or upgrade your heroes. If you’d like to play as a different hero you will have to earn Gems. Some heroes unfortunately require paying real money in order to use them. There is also a Slot Machine for which you also need Gems to use it.

To earn Gems you will have to go to the Gem Shop where you will be able to watch a 30-second video that will give you 500 Gems. You can also continue watching more videos but you will get a bit less Gems than the first time.  You can also buy Gems using real money as an In-App Purchase.

There are also Daily Rewards which is another way to earn Gems. A Chest can also be found on your way to the exit for which you need Gems to unlock. This Chest can give you various weapons to give you a head start on your next journey.

At the end of each level is a Portal which will take you to the next level. Before you are taken to the next level, you are given 3 different powers to choose from.

After every 4 levels there’s a boss fight which isn’t easy, so make sure you’re stacked up on HP and Shields, as well as Energy.

Once you lose you are taken to the Game Over screen where you can see how far you managed to get through the game, how many Gems and Gold you have earned, the amount of enemies slain and how long you have spent playing.
